Not everyone is built the same or has the same abilities.  So how can a instructor expect you to fight exactly like he does?  You have to train to your attributes, not to his.
If you are a good wrestler but your instructor is a good boxer, don’t let him take your wrestling away from you and try to turn you into a boxer.  Add boxing to your wrestling but keep the wrestling as your foundation.  If you are a good boxer and your instructor is a BJJ guy, don’t give up your strength in an ill advised attempt to become a BJJ guy, instead learn to defend submissions, take-downs and to get back on your feet where your boxing can come back into play.

A good instructor will not try to make you into a clone of himself but rather he will add to your game and build off your attributes and your foundation.  I have seen too many gyms try to make fighters into copies of the instructor.

Usually it’s because the instructor is one dimensional and doesn’t have a well-rounded game himself or hasn’t advanced with the sport of MMA.  You have to be well-rounded and always value your foundation if you are fortunate enough to have a solid bedrock in one aspect of the game, build and work around your attributes to become the best fighter you can be, not be a reproduction of your instructor.

At SSF Submission Academy I have boxing, Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ instructors because no one person is great in all areas.  All our instructors are or were fighters so they have an understanding on how to modify each aspect of the sport.  If you are only interested in BJJ then train at a BJJ school, if you are only interested in boxing then join a boxing gym but if you are interested in MMA you have to train with people that understand the sport and how to build winners.
